kiese, i've been taking a look at your entire blog and what transpired in "Recipe 150" is inspiring stuff. I think its interesting that not only your race and gender, but your progressive cognitive endeavors/ideas frightened your colleagues. It seemed that it wasn't that fact that you were a young black guy which was so bothersome, but that fact combined with the way you seem to instill cognitive dissonance in your readers, students, and colleagues when teaching subject matter related to racially-charged issues frightened the FASC. I would think that at a self-proclaimed "egalitarian" college community, this sort of blatant racism and subsequent denial of its occurrence would happen. As a student who has witnessed first-hand the flaws of vassar's "administrative committees," it seems a common theme for colleges' admins to play the role of the spin doctor, either twisting the situation to seem like their opposing party (whether faculty staff or student) lashed out unprevoked, or to distance themselves from the situation pretending it didn't occur.

On a positive note, this is the sort of progress that needs to take place in academic settings. Your stand here highlights not only the need for more awareness of embedded/subtle/subliminal racism, but the more general issue of the lack of oversight for college administrations and their habits of bending/creating policies on the spot which coalesce well with their self-interests. congrats on tenure as well.

Kiese, you always seemed obnoxious and egotistical whenever I interacted with you at Vassar. This post reiterates my sentiments. I understand your complaint, and I think there's probably some truth to it. But don't be such a exhibitionistic ass about it. Posting it on your blog and whining about it? It's hard to respect that.
